INDAVERs exceeding of the dioxins standard.

High dioxins concentration found in

chicken eggs in the nearby of

INDAVERS waste incinerator

We want to inform you about the INDAVER's dioxins releases .

The accident (?) caused by Indavers static kiln at Antwerp is much bad than INDAVER first was claiming.

The INDAVERS static kiln is incinerating liquid hydrocarbons.

Liquid halogenated hydrocarbons are incinerated at a temperature above 1,200C in a static kiln with a capacity of 8,000 tons per year. In this process, 20,000 tons of hydrochloric acid can be recuperated each year. Neutralisation of waste acid and alkali, reduction of Cr6+, oxidation of cyanides, immobilisation of heavy metals.

Indaver runs a state-of-the-art waste treatment facility in Antwerp that includes two rotary kiln incinerators, a static kiln incinerator, a physic-chemical treatment centre, a landfill, and a water purification centre. This major company has significant expansion plans for its new site in Beveren, where it plans to build a landfill and grate incinerator. It is interested in acquiring new technologies in its field of expertise.

Did we hear this before in Ireland? ...  "state of the art" !!!!!!!

The facts

Following the policy and the environmental lows INDAVER has to measure dioxins only one time a year for this installation (the static kiln).  The measuring dated from July 24 2002.  On August 14 2002 INDAVER shut down his static kiln due the results of the measuring.  The standard for dioxins releases in the European directive 2000/76/EEC and the Flemish standard are 0,1 ng TEQ/Nm, the measuring of this static kiln was 183.52 ng TEQ/Nm3.  This means 1,835 times more then the standard of directive 2000/76/EEC and the Flemish standard.

The Flemish environmental inspector Mr Bernaert says that the source of this event isn't known at this moment.  He is supposing that this is caused due a structural fail of the kiln.  The question is, says Mr Bernaert,  from witch moment this exceeding is dating.  The most sensitive territory, due the releasing of dioxins, is within an area between 1.5 and 3 kilometre from the kiln says Mr. Bernaert.

Due to scientific information and about affecting vegetation the dangerous territory is 12 kilometre in the surrounding of the kiln, says agriculture specialist Mr. Luc Busschaert.  It can have consequences for grazing cows and their milk.

INDAVERS static kiln is situated just near a residential area of the district Stabroek.

Figures of dioxins in chicken eggs found after

Indavers exceeding of the standard

In October 2002 the chicken eggs in two districts in the nearby of the Indaver waste incineration exceed the Belgian Standards for eggs (standard = 5 pg TEQ/g fat).  The Belgian Federal Agency for the Safety of the Food Chain found dioxins values till 11 pg TEQ/g fat.  The standard exceeded more than twice.

The two districts (Stabroek and Berendrecht) are situated less than 2 miles form the INDAVER waste incinerator that exceeded the standards.
